Perfect for a relaxed climb with maximum acclimatization and comfort
Mount Meru, a dormant stratovolcano formed over 500,000 years ago, stands at 4,566m as Tanzania's second-highest peak. A massive eruption 250,000 years ago reshaped its eastern flank, creating a dramatic crater. Revered by local Meru and Arusha communities, it holds deep spiritual significance.
The first recorded summit was in 1904 by German explorer Fritz Jaeger, guided by locals through treacherous ridges. Today, the 3-day route is a challenging yet rewarding trek for experienced climbers seeking a swift ascent.
The 5-day Mount Meru trek is designed for those who want to truly experience the mountain and maximize their summit chances. Two full acclimatization days and extended time in nature create the perfect conditions for success and unforgettable memories.
The 5-day itinerary includes a unique acclimatization hike to Mount Meru’s crater on Day 2, offering stunning views and enhancing your summit success by allowing extra time to adjust to the altitude.
Detailed schedule for the leisurely Mount Meru trek
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you'll be transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Meet your guide for a pre-climb briefing to prepare for the intense 3-day adventure ahead.
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport
Your Mount Meru adventure begins as you leave Arusha or Moshi in the morning and drive to Arusha National Park. After completing park formalities at Momella Gate, the trek starts with a gradual ascent through savannah and open grasslands, home to wildlife such as buffalo, giraffes, and warthogs.
You'll reach the dense rainforest zone where you may encounter colobus monkeys. The hike continues through lush forests until you arrive at Miriakamba Hut for an overnight stay. From here, enjoy beautiful sunset views over the plains and Kilimanjaro.
Momella Gate
Spend a full day acclimatizing at Miriakamba. Explore the immediate surroundings, rest, and let your body adjust to the altitude. Short walks around the hut help with acclimatization.
Enjoy the forest environment, observe wildlife, and mentally prepare for the climb ahead. A proper rest day significantly increases your summit chances.
Mount Meru Crater
Today's trek takes you through the montane forest and into the heather and moorland zone. The trail is steeper than the previous days as you ascend toward Saddle Hut, located between Meru's peak and Little Meru.
Along the way, pass through dense forests with occasional clearings offering magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro. At Saddle Hut, you can rest or optionally hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for stunning panoramic views of both mountains.
Saddle Hut
A full rest day at your highest camp. This second acclimatization day is what makes the 5-day trek so effective. Optionally, hike to Little Mount Meru (3,820m) for views.
Spend the afternoon resting and mentally preparing. Your two rest days at altitude significantly increase oxygen adaptation and summit success.
Socialist Peak
On the final day, you will descend back through the lush forest, passing through the same scenic paths you took on Day 1. This section of the trek provides more opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the beauty of Arusha National Park.
Once you reach Momella Gate, you'll sign out and meet your vehicle for the drive back to Arusha or Moshi. You'll arrive in the early afternoon, concluding your unforgettable Mount Meru adventure.
